Marangu Route 1 day hike

A day hike on Mount Kilimanjaro offers a taste of the mountain's beauty and challenges without committing to a multi-day climb. You'll typically hike a portion of the Marangu Route, reaching Mandara Hut (2,700m or 8,858ft), and enjoy views of the peak and surrounding landscapes.These day hikes are a great option for those who want to experience Kilimanjaro's lower slopes and diverse scenery.

Machame Route (The Whiskey Route)

  • Duration: 6-7 days (7 days recommended for first-timers).

  • Difficulty: More challenging than Marangu, but offers better acclimatization and higher success rates.

  • Description: A popular and scenic route, known for its diverse landscapes and challenging terrain.

  • Pros: Scenic, good acclimatization, higher success rates.

  • Cons: More challenging terrain, potential for crowds.

Rongai Route

  • Duration: 6-8 days.

  • Difficulty: Considered one of the easier routes, especially for beginners.

  • Description: Ascends Kilimanjaro from the north, offering a unique perspective and a sense of wilderness.

  • Pros: Easier ascent, good for beginners, scenic.

  • Cons: Less crowded, but less scenic than some other routes.

Marangu Route (The Tourist Route)

  • Duration: 5-6 days. 

  • Difficulty: Considered the easiest in terms of ascent profile, but also has the lowest success rate due to shorter acclimatization. 

  • Description: This route offers hut accommodations and is the only route where trekkers sleep in huts instead of tents. It's known for its gradual slope and is popular with budget travelers. 

  • Pros: Easier ascent, hut accommodations. 

  • Cons: Lower success rates due to shorter acclimatization, less scenic.

Lemosho Route

  • Duration: 7-8 days. 

  • Difficulty: Offers excellent acclimatization and is considered one of the most scenic routes. 

  • Description: Starts on the western side of the mountain and is known for its stunning views and relatively gradual ascent. 

  • Pros: Beautiful scenery, excellent acclimatization, higher success rates. 

  • Cons: Can be more expensive than other routes.

Northern Circuit Route

  • Duration: 8-9 days.

  • Difficulty: Considered one of the most challenging routes due to its length and elevation gain.

  • Description: The longest route on Kilimanjaro, offering stunning views and high success rates due to ample acclimatization time.

  • Pros: Highest success rates due to acclimatization, beautiful scenery.

  • Cons: Longest route, most challenging.
